Summer Farmhand – Dairy Farm

Location: Lepperton, Taranaki
Employment period: 1 November to 31 March
Hours: Up to 30 hours per week
Accommodation: Drive-in position – no accommodation provided

Looking for summer work?

We’re looking for a reliable, motivated Summer Farmhand to help out on our dairy farm over the summer months.

The position runs from 1 November through to 31 March, with flexibility around start and finish dates for the right candidate.

This role would suit someone with dairy farming experience, someone keen to learn, or a student looking for summer work and hands-on experience in the dairy industry.

There is potential for ongoing employment into the following season for a suitable candidate.

About the farm

We operate a 72-hectare effective dairy farm in Lepperton, Taranaki, milking a peak of approximately 205 cows and producing around 85,000–90,000 kg of milk solids per season.

We run a low-input, pasture-based system with a strong focus on grass management, animal health and maintaining good farm standards.

The farm uses Halter virtual fencing collars, giving you the opportunity to work with modern farming technology and innovative ways of managing livestock and pasture.

About the role

This is a practical, hands-on position assisting with the day-to-day running of the farm.

Duties will include:

  • Assisting with milking and general dairy shed duties.

  • Shifting cows and managing pasture allocation.

  • Working with Halter collars and virtual fencing technology.

  • Helping with animal health and stock handling.

  • Fencing, weed control and general farm maintenance.

  • Assisting with other farm tasks as required.

Hours and working days

Hours will vary depending on farm requirements, with up to 30 hours per week available.

There are no set regular working days. Days and hours will be arranged flexibly in consultation with the farm owner, depending on availability and workload.

This arrangement could suit a student looking for summer work or someone wanting flexible part-time employment over the summer months.

About you

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Reliable, punctual and willing to get stuck in.

  • Practical, hardworking and keen to learn.

  • Comfortable working outdoors and around dairy cows.

  • Able to follow instructions and use their initiative.

  • Interested in farming, whether experienced or just starting out.

Previous dairy farming experience would be an advantage but isn't essential for the right person. Students looking for summer work are encouraged to apply.

A current driver's licence and reliable transport are required.

What we offer

  • Seasonal employment over the summer months.

  • Flexible working arrangements where practical.

  • Hands-on experience in a pasture-based dairy farming system.

  • Experience working with Halter virtual fencing technology.

  • Pay based on experience, skills and attitude.

  • Potential for ongoing employment into the following season for a suitable candidate.

Please note: This is a drive-in position. No accommodation is provided, so applicants must arrange their own transport and accommodation.

How to apply

If you're reliable, keen to work and interested in gaining experience on a dairy farm, we'd like to hear from you.

Please get in touch with a brief introduction about yourself, any relevant experience and your availability over the summer.
