Job Description

Calf Rearer & Relief Milker
Smithill Limited – Southland

Smithill Limited is a progressive family-owned dairy farming business operating four dairy farms and support blocks in Southland. We milk approximately 2,100 cows and pride ourselves on strong animal welfare, good systems, supportive teams, and providing opportunities for people to develop within the dairy industry.

We are seeking a reliable and motivated Calf Rearer & Relief Milker to join our team for the upcoming calving season, with the potential for ongoing work for the right person.

About the role

This is a hands on position that combines calf rearing, relief milking, and general farm support. You'll work alongside experienced farm managers and be involved in all aspects of caring for our youngest stock while helping support farm operations during our busiest time of year. This could involve stock work at grazing properties and potentially the role could extend to be permanent for the right applicant.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Feeding and caring for newborn calves
  • Monitoring calf health and wellbeing
  • Administering treatments and recording animal health information
  • Cleaning and maintaining calf sheds and equipment
  • Relief milking across our farms
  • Assisting with stock movements and general farm duties
  • Supporting farm teams during calving and mating

These duties reflect typical calf rearer and relief milker responsibilities within New Zealand dairy farming.

What we're looking for

  • Reliable and punctual
  • Good stock sense and genuine care for animals
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors
  • Previous calf rearing or milking experience preferred but not essential
  • Full driver's licence preferred

What we offer

  • Competitive hourly rate based on experience
  • Supportive and experienced team environment
  • Training and development opportunities
  • Flexible hours and roster options
  • Opportunity for ongoing employment within our wider farming business
  • Potential pathway into more permanent dairy farming roles

Whether you're an experienced calf rearer looking for your next opportunity or someone keen to build a career in the dairy industry, we'd love to hear from you.
