Experienced Farm Assistant

Job Description

Douglas Farms (ITR Ag Ltd) is seeking a motivated and committed Farm Assistant / Herd Manager to join our progressive dairy operation based in Whangārei. This is an excellent opportunity to become part of a supportive, well-established team focused on high standards of animal care, farm performance, and workplace culture.

Our farm can milk up to 550 cows through a 36-bale rotary - and operates with fully integrated Halter technology, reducing the need for traditional break fencing and stock movement by motorbike.

This position is ultimately a fixed term role to May 2027, but could be longer term (for the right person). The proposed start date is from 1st Nov 2026, however flexibility is available for the right applicant.

Roster

The role operates on a double rotation roster:

  • 8 days on / 2 days off (Tuesday & Wednesday)
  • 8 days on / 3 days off (Friday, Saturday & Sunday)

This provides a three-day weekend every third weekend and five days off across each three-week cycle.

Accommodation

Well-maintained accommodation is available as part of the position. Not furnished.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Farm Manager couple, you will work alongside a capable and collaborative team assisting with the day-to-day operations of the farm. Responsibilities will include:

  • Milk harvesting and shed operations
  • Animal health and welfare
  • Tractor work and feeding out
  • Young stock management and mating support
  • Weed control, effluent and irrigation management
  • General farm maintenance and upkeep

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have at least one year of dairy farming experience and be confident operating:

  • 2-wheel motorbikes
  • Quad bikes
  • Tractors and farm machinery

We are equally focused on finding someone with the right attitude — a reliable and honest team player who takes pride in their work, enjoys working in a team environment, and is enthusiastic about building a career within the dairy industry.

If this opportunity sounds like the right fit for you, please send your CV and cover letter to Erin.
