Te tūranga | The role
We are looking for an experienced and dependable Senior Dairy Assistant to join our team and help support daily operations across our Rotary and Herringbone dairy sites.
As a Senior Dairy Assistant, you will be a key member of the Dairy team. You will help maintain high standards of animal welfare, milk quality, farm hygiene and safe work practices, while guiding and supporting newer team members.
This is a hands-on role for someone with solid dairy experience who takes pride in doing things well and is ready to step up into greater responsibility. During your time with the Trust, you will receive ongoing support and development to grow your skills, progress towards farm management and build a rewarding career with Tūaropaki Trust.
Key responsibilities
Carry out milking to a high standard, with a strong focus on milk quality, hygiene and safe milking practices.
Support animal health and welfare across the herd, including stock handling, calving and mating activities as required.
Lead by example in health and safety, including safely operating farm vehicles and equipment, reporting hazards and helping improve farm practices.
Keep accurate animal health, milk quality and farm records, and make sure sheds, yards and equipment are clean and well maintained.
Act as a role model for junior kaimahi, sharing your knowledge and supporting their development.
Step in to oversee day-to-day operations when the Farm Manager or Assistant Manager is away, and help build a positive, supportive team environment.
He kōrero mōu | About you
You will bring:
A minimum of three years’ practical dairy farming experience, including milking, stock handling and animal health.
Experience operating farm vehicles and machinery safely, including tractors, side-by-sides and other equipment relevant to the role.
A full driver’s licence.
A sound understanding of animal welfare, milk quality, farm hygiene and health and safety requirements.
The confidence and judgement to work independently and step up to support day-to-day operations when senior farm leaders are unavailable.
The ability to guide and support less experienced team members and contribute positively to the wider Dairy team.
Good communication skills and basic computer skills for farm and animal record keeping.
The resilience and physical capability to work in a hands-on farming environment, including early starts, weekends and seasonal demands.
A relevant dairy or Primary ITO qualification is desirable, or a willingness to work towards one.
