Assistant Calf Rearer (Casual)

Job Description

Apatu Farms is a family-owned agribusiness. Our operations are diverse, encompassing pipfruit, viticulture, vegetable cropping, export onions, transport/logistic and dairy farming.

Our Plantation Dairy site is based in Ongaonga, Hawke’s Bay. We run 1,800 cows at peak, milk through a 60-bale rotary, and operate a twice-year calving system alongside year-round milking — so we’re a busy farm! To keep everything running smoothly, we have a fantastic team of 15 people on site, supported by the wider Apatu Farms group.

The opportunity:

We’re looking for an Assistant Calf Rearer to join our Apatu Farms – Plantation Dairy team for the upcoming calf rearing season. This is a casual position, as we continue to grow and expect a higher number of calves this season. Hours may vary week to week, so we’re looking for someone who is flexible and happy to work with the team as demand changes throughout the season. You’ll be working alongside an experienced Calf Rearer in a busy, hands-on, and rewarding environment, where animal welfare and attention to detail are top priorities.

About the role:

This is a practical, physical role focused on caring for and rearing calves from arrival through to approximately 4 weeks of age, before they transition to our rearing block. You’ll be working as part of a supportive, on-farm team who take pride in their work and are passionate about the dairy industry. Every day brings something different, and your contribution will play an important role in setting calves up for a strong start.

Key activities of the role include:

  • Feeding and caring for calves
  • Mixing calf milk replacer
  • Cleaning feeders, equipment, and sheds
  • Monitoring calf health and wellbeing
  • Bedding up pens and maintaining a tidy work area
  • Assisting with treatments and animal handling as required

About you:

  • You're an animal lover who isn’t afraid to get stuck in and get jobs done.
  • You're reliable, physically fit and comfortable outdoors
  • Previous calf-rearing experience is a bonus (but isn’t essential).
  • You are committed to a safe and healthy workplace for our people and our animals.
  • Have your own reliable transport

You must be a New Zealand Citizen or permanent resident to be considered for this role.
