About us

Dairy Trust Taranaki is a leading dairy research and demonstration organisation operating four farms across the region. Our work focuses on practical, science-based solutions that improve farm performance, environmental outcomes, and animal wellbeing.

This season, we are running a dedicated calf rearing research project as part of our wider Net Zero programme, working alongside industry and science partners to test new systems and approaches.

The role

We are looking for experienced calf rearers to take full responsibility for calf rearing within a structured research project.

This is a hands-on role where your focus will be the day-to-day care, health, and performance of calves, while also supporting accurate data collection for the trial.

You will be working across automated calf rearing systems, following clear protocols to ensure consistency and high standards.

Key responsibilities
  • Feeding and monitoring calves daily, ensuring high standards of animal welfare
  • Administering colostrum, milk feeding, and transitioning calves through systems
  • Identifying health issues early and administering treatments as required
  • Maintaining excellent hygiene across calf sheds and equipment
  • Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and system-specific protocols
  • Recording accurate data including weights, treatments, and observations
  • Working closely with the farm and science teams to ensure trial consistency

  • Proven calf rearing experience.
  • Strong animal health knowledge and good stockmanship
  • High attention to detail, particularly around record keeping and accuracy
  • Ability to follow systems and protocols consistently
  • Reliable, organised, and able to work independently
  • Good communication skills
