Calf Rearer / Relief Milker
Location: Colyton (10 minutes from Feilding), Manawatu
About the Farm
We are a progressive 530-cow dairy farm based in Colyton, just 10 minutes from Feilding. We run efficient systems with a strong focus on animal welfare, team culture, and getting the basics right during the busy calving period.
The Role
We are looking for a reliable and motivated person to join our team in a Calf Rearer / Relief Milker role. This position is ideal for someone wanting solid work through calving, with ongoing relief milking opportunities afterward.
Key Dates & Work Structure
Calving Period (20 July – 20 September):
- Primary role: Calf rearing (Monday to Friday)
- Optional weekend work available (or cover will be arranged if preferred)
- Some relief milking duties, mainly:
- Assisting with getting fresh cows through the shed
- Helping new heifers learn the milking routine
- Supporting the team during peak workload
Post-Calving (Mid-September – January/February):
- Ongoing relief milking work, including:
- Regular weekend milking
- Covering staff for sickness and annual leave
- Extra help during busy periods
Key Responsibilities
- Feeding and caring for calves to a high standard
- Monitoring calf health and reporting any issues early
- Maintaining clean and hygienic calf-rearing facilities
- Assisting with milking as required
- Supporting general farm duties when needed
- Helping integrate fresh cows and heifers into the herd
What We’re Looking For
- Dairy or calf-rearing experience preferred (training provided for the right person)
- Good stock sense and attention to detail
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently
- Positive attitude and team player
- Flexible and willing to help when required
