Farm Assistant – Dairy Farming

Location: Leeston/Dunsandel, New Zealand

Employment Type: Full-time, permanent (minimum 40 hours/week)

Pay Rate: 23.95 - 28.00 per hour (depending on experience)

About Us

We have two farms, our Leeston farm runs 580 cows through a 40 aside HB shed with limited technology on 167 hectares and our Dunsandel farm runs 650 cows through a 42 aside HB shed with ACR's. Both farms have Halter and an integrated drafting gate. 

The Role

We are looking for a hardworking and reliable individual to join our team and work between both farms as an entry level Farm Assistant. You’ll be an essential part of our daily operations, helping to keep the farm running smoothly and our animals healthy. You’ll work closely with the Farm Managers and teams to ensure high standards of animal care, pasture management, and farm maintenance.

We have a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy. We require any successful applicant to complete a pre-employment drug test and ongoing random drug testing throughout the season.

We require the successful applicant to have no criminal history, and we may conduct a criminal history check prior to employment.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with daily milking, feeding, and animal health checks.

• Maintain hygiene and safety standards in the dairy shed.

• Help with pasture management, including fencing and irrigation.

• Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment.

• Support seasonal tasks such as calving and mating.

Skills & Experience Required

• No Experience in dairy farming required as on job training will be provided.

• Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and rostered shifts (6 on 1 off during Calving).
• Ability to work as part of a team and has clear communication skills and comfortable reporting any issues.

• Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

• Passionate about animal care and farm operations.
• Ability to clean and maintain the tidiness of farm vehicles.

• A positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn.
• Physically strong and able to lift calves.
• Great time management skills.

• A valid driver’s licence (tractor or motorbike experience an advantage).
• Education: Highschool certificate or higher required.
