Role Overview

 We are seeking a motivated and experienced Second in Charge (2IC) to join our team. This role is a vital hands-on leadership position. You will work closely with the farm owners to oversee daily operations and you will have full operational responsibility for the farm when the owners are off.

The dairy is a 22 aside herringbone with cup removers and in shed feed system. A 2700 sqm composting barn is under construction.

 

Key Responsibilities

Herd Management & Stockmanship

  • Milking Operations: Leading efficient, high-standard milking routines and maintaining excellent shed hygiene.
  • Animal Health: Identifying, treating, and recording animal health issues, mastitis, and lameness.
  • Breeding & Calving: Assisting with heat detection, AI preparation, calving intervention, and calf rearing.

 

Feed & Pasture Management

  • Pasture Allocation: Executing the grazing plan, calculating break sizes, and shifting fences.
  • Feed Monitoring: Measuring pasture covers (plate metering) and monitoring residual levels.
  • Supplementary Feeding: Managing the feeding out of silage, crop, or palm kernel (PKE) as directed.

 

Machinery, Infrastructure & Compliance

  • Machinery Operation: Safely operating tractors, quad bikes, tractor implements, and feeding equipment.
  • Farm Maintenance: Performing general maintenance, including fence repairs, water lines, and clean-up.
  • Effluent & Environment: Operating the effluent system in strict compliance with regional council regulations.
  • Health & Safety: Adhering to farm safety protocols and reporting hazards immediately.

 

Qualifications & Experience Required

  • Experience: Minimum 4 years of proven dairy farming experience, ideally with previous Herd Manager experience.
  • Attributes: Strong communication skills, a positive attitude, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Legality: Must have the legal right to work in New Zealand.
