Position Title: Relief Milker

Location: Edendale 

Employment Type: Full-time, Fixed-term (Peak Season Visa)

Hours of Work: Minimum 30 hours per week , with additional hours as required during peak seasonal demand.

Position Purpose

The Relief Milker is responsible for carrying out daily milking operations and assisting with the care and management of dairy cattle to ensure high standards of animal welfare, milk quality, and farm efficiency. The role provides essential support during the peak calving and lactation period and works under the direction of the Farm Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Milk dairy cows using modern milking equipment and follow correct milking procedures.
  • Prepare the dairy shed before milking and complete cleaning and sanitising procedures after each milking.
  • Identify and report cows showing signs of illness, injury, mastitis, lameness, or other health concerns.
  • Assist with animal health treatments as directed, including drenching, vaccinations, and administering approved animal health products.
  • Move stock safely and calmly between paddocks and the dairy shed.
  • Assist with feeding stock, including allocating pasture and feeding supplements.
  • Maintain high standards of milk quality and hygiene in accordance with farm and dairy company requirements.
  • Wash down and maintain the milking plant, dairy shed, and associated equipment.
  • Follow all workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Accurately complete farm records as required.

Skills and Experience

  • Previous dairy farming or milking experience is required minimum 1 year experience 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Physically fit and capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to maintaining high standards of animal welfare and farm hygiene.

Working Conditions

  • Early morning, afternoon, weekend, and public holiday work will be required on a rostered basis.
  • The role involves prolonged standing, walking, lifting, and working around livestock and machinery.
  • Appropriate personal protective equipment will be provided where required.
