Herd Manager

We are looking for1 experienced Herd Managers to join our dairy farm team for the upcoming seasons. The farm operates a 54-bail rotary shed with Protrack and ACRs.

The successful applicants must be in New Zealand and must have at least 1 years’ relevant dairy farming experience.

The successful applicants must have a clear understanding of the daily operations of a dairy farm and must be responsible, reliable, and able to work as part of a team.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with herd management, animal health monitoring, calving, mating, pasture allocation, and daily farm routines as directed by the Farm Manager.
  • Carrying out daily milking and shed duties.
  • Setting up fences and assisting with general farm maintenance.
  • Carrying out weed spraying as required.
  • Maintaining general tidiness of the farm and work areas.
  • Managing the safe handling, movement, and welfare of animals in line with farm policy.
  • Observing and reporting any animal health or welfare issues.
  • Moving and handling all classes of stock safely.
  • Managing and operating dairy effluent systems in line with farm procedures and regional council requirements.
  • Understanding how effluent affects the on-farm environment and ensuring compliance with environmental responsibilities.
  • Working well with others and helping to build a positive farm team culture.
  • Understanding what makes a good farm team and how individual actions affect the wider team.
  • Managing the safe use and maintenance of farm machinery, vehicles, and technology in line with farm policy.
  • Managing the farm irrigation system and assisting with identifying irrigation problems and carrying out repairs as directed.
  • Following the farm’s health, safety and wellbeing policies.
  • Identifying hazards, understanding safety procedures, and demonstrating safe on-farm work practices.

The applicants must:

  • Have at least 1 year relevant dairy farming experience.
  • Have good knowledge of daily dairy farm operations.
  • Be reliable and responsible.
  • Have good animal handling skills.
  • Be able to work well with others.
  • Have good communication skills.
  • Be able to work weekends as required.
  • Be able to pass a drug test if required.
  • Comply with the farm’s drug-free policy.
  • Comply with the farm’s no-smoking policy.
