Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Herd Manager to join our dairy farming operation on the West Coast of New Zealand.

This is a full-time, permanent position on a 1,200-cow dairy farm. The successful applicant will play a key role in the day-to-day management of the farm, working closely with the farm owners and staff to achieve production, animal welfare, and environmental goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate daily milking operations.
  • Monitor and maintain herd health, animal welfare, and milk quality standards.
  • Assist with pasture management, feed allocation, and feed budgeting.
  • Supervise, support, and train farm staff as required.
  • Identify and treat animal health issues or arrange treatment when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate farm records, including animal health, production, and compliance records.
  • Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment.
  • Assist with farm maintenance, fencing, water systems, and infrastructure.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety policies, environmental regulations, and farm procedures.
  • Work with farm management to achieve production and business targets.

Hours and Remuneration

  • Permanent, full-time position.
  • Guaranteed minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Hours may vary depending on seasonal farm requirements, with a maximum of 45 hours per week.
  • Salary of $75,000–$80,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience.
  • On-farm accommodation may be available by mutual agreement.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Have at least 2 years of relevant dairy farming experience in a Herd Manager, Assistant Manager, or similar role.
  • Have completed at least NCEA Level 1 or an equivalent qualification.
  • Have experience with dairy herd management, animal health, and pasture-based farming systems.
  • Be capable of operating farm machinery and equipment safely.
  • Be physically fit and able to undertake the duties of the role.
  • Hold a current driver's licence or be able to obtain one.
  • Be able to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug and alcohol testing.
  • Have no criminal convictions that would prevent employment in this position.
