Herd Manager – Spring Calving Dairy Farm (South Taranaki)

We are seeking a capable, reliable and self-managing Herd Manager to join our family-owned dairy farm, located 15 minutes south of Hāwera, Taranaki.

Start date: 1 June 2026

This role suits someone who takes pride in their work and is confident managing day-to-day farm operations independently.

The Farm Set Up

  • 220 Jersey spring calving herd
  • 24-aside herringbone shed with automatic cup removers
  • In-shed feeding system
  • Automatic drafting
  • Halter technology in use
  • A well set-up farm flat to rolling with even sized paddocks and central race

We run a simple, well-structured system and value consistency, attention to detail, and high standards of animal care.

The Role

This is a Herd Manager position with responsibility for the day-to-day running of the farm.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing milking routines and shed operations
  • Monitoring herd health and identifying issues early
  • Following and maintaining farm systems and procedures
  • Feeding, break fencing and general farm tasks
  • Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness and organisation
  • Clear and reliable communication

This role requires someone who can:
work independently
self-manage effectively
take ownership of daily operations
be consistent, reliable and organised

What we are looking for:

  • Previous dairy farming experience (Herd Manager level preferred)
  • Confident managing a dairy shed and milking independently
  • Good stock sense and strong animal welfare awareness
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Honest, dependable and proactive
