Lawwal Holsteins is a family farm located 15 minutes north of Hamilton and only 10 minutes away from Morrinsville.
We have a split calving herd with 70% calving in the autumn and the other 30% in the spring. Lawwal Holsteins have registered Holstein cows producing an average of 750kg milksolids per cow using a TMR feeding system. The Lawwal herd is in the top 3 Fat producing Holstein herds in New Zealand.
There is a large emphasis on breeding, mainly North American genetics are used with a large amount of embryo work done year round. GEA cowscout collars are used to monitor heats, rumination and activity. A GEA draft gate is also included. All AI on cows and no bulls are used.
Our farm is different to an ordinary dairy farm, since April 2018 our cows have been housed in a free stall barn with all staff having specialised roles. We are high input however grow 75% of feed on farm.
The 50 bail rotary has automatic cup removers however we like to have 2 people in the cowshed and 1 person outside bringing cows in and cleaning the beds with a tractor.
It is a closed herd therefore all young-stock stay on farm.
We undertake all our own cropping work, growing approx. 200 ha of Maize with a annual grass rotation.
