Kohitiata farms is a family owned and operated dairy, sheep and beef farming business in the Tararua/Southern Hawkes Bay region. Built up by the hard work of Norm and Del Atkins, the 126 eff. ha dairy unit is 1/3 flat and 2/3rds rolling hill, runs 350 cows and is the home of Kohitiata Jerseys, Edenmore Holstein-Friesians, Ayrshires and Shorthorns. The dairy unit is a split calving system, milking year round, with a production target of 130000kg of milksolids using some maize silage and fodder beet. The farm has recently transitioned to once-a-day milking through a 28 a-side herringbone. An additional 550ha over five blocks are farmed in the area. These blocks are hill country to flat arable land, and are used as support for the dairy unit, as well as running sheep and beef, including the Glenrua Charolais stud.
We are located at Makotuku village, about one hour drive from Hastings/Napier or Palmerston North. There is a local pub on our boundary and cafés, restaurants, shops, a cinema and schools in the near by towns of Norsewood, Dannevirke and Waipukarau.
