At Ruawai Farm Friesian 675 cows are milked through a 50 bail automated rotary. About 530 cows are wintered on Ruawai Farm in a free stall wintering shed. The remainder is wintered on silage and crop on the 60 ha support block across the road. Another support block called Forestvale carries replacement stock and beef cattle. This is an owner-operated farm where the owners work closely together with the team. The milking routine is twice a day to start with after calving. Over summer often a 3in2 milking routine is adapted. Bobby calves are kept to a minimum by using a beef breed bull over the herd after artificial insemination is finished.
