We are seeking an honest and reliable Herd Manager to join our team on our dairy farm in the
Southland Region.
Key tasks and responsibilities:
• Run the dairy shed and manage an efficient and hygienic milking routine, including
maintaining shed hygiene and plant wash procedures.
• Maintain milk quality by identifying and resolving issues such as high somatic cell counts
and mastitis, and record all animal treatments.
• Handle stock safely and monitor herd health, body condition and welfare, identifying,
treating and reporting animal health issues.
• Assist with calving, mating and herd testing, and maintain accurate herd records.
• Allocate daily feed in line with the farm feed plan, set break fences and feed out
supplements.
• Monitor pasture cover and control weeds and pests to maintain pasture quality.
• Assist with nutrient, effluent and water management, including operating and monitoring
the effluent system in line with farm policy.
• Supervise and train junior farm staff, and help build a strong team culture.
• Safely use and maintain plant, farm vehicles and machinery.
• Use farm apps and software to record farm information accurately.
• Look for opportunities to work more effectively and efficiently to improve the business.
• Follow all relevant workplace health and safety procedures, and identify and report
hazards.
Candidate Requirements:-
• Be honest and reliable
• A good understanding of the fundamentals of dairy farming and the ability to complete core
duties to a high standard
• Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision and to supervise and train junior staff
• Ability to work efficiently in a team and independently
• A can-do attitude and willingness to get stuck in and complete jobs to a high standard
• Proficient in technology, with the ability to record farm information accurately and use farm
apps
Experience or Qualification:-
• At least 2 years of relevant dairy farm work experience OR a relevant New Zealand
qualification at Level 4 or above is required.
Accommodation:-
• On-farm accommodation is available if wanted. Living on the farm is optional and is not a
condition of employment.
Hours and Position:-
• This is a full-time permanent position with a guaranteed minimum of 30 hours per week
