Job Description

Herd Manager – Dairy Farm

We are looking for a motivated and reliable Herd Manager to join our dairy farming team on our 135-hectare flat dairy farm with a 40-aside herringbone shed.

The Herd Manager will play an important role in maintaining the health, wellbeing and performance of the herd while working closely with the farm management team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Daily care and management of the dairy herd
  • Bringing cows to and from the milking shed safely and efficiently
  • Assisting with morning and afternoon milking
  • Monitoring cow health, body condition and behaviour
  • Identifying and reporting sick, injured or lame cows
  • Assisting with animal health treatments and following veterinary recommendations
  • Calf and young-stock care when required
  • Heat detection and assisting with reproductive management
  • Monitoring calving cows and supporting the calving process
  • Maintaining accurate animal health and herd records
  • Supporting herd weighing, drafting and stock movements
  • Ensuring cows have appropriate feed, water and comfortable grazing conditions
  • Maintaining high standards of animal welfare
  • Following farm health and safety procedures
  • Keeping yards, races, equipment and stock areas clean and well maintained
  • Communicating effectively with the farm manager and wider team
  • Helping with general farm duties when required

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Experienced in dairy herd management or have relevant dairy farming experience
  • Reliable, responsible and hardworking
  • Confident handling dairy cows
  • Observant and able to identify changes in cow health or behaviour
  • Comfortable working independently and as part of a team
  • Safety-conscious and committed to high animal welfare standards
  • Willing to learn and take responsibility
