Herd Manager – 1,050 Cows | Rakaia, Canterbury

Are you a passionate and skilled dairy professional looking to take the next step in your career? We are seeking a reliable, motivated Herd Manager to join our team on a modern 285 ha single-farm operation located in Rakaia, Canterbury.

Working alongside a team of 6, you will play a hands-on role in daily herd performance, stock health, feed management, and maintaining high operational standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Herd Health & Animal Welfare: Daily monitoring of herd health, mastitis control, lameness prevention, and executing treatment plans.

  • Reproduction & Mating: Assisting with heat detection, Artificial Breeding (AB) preparation, and calving operations.

  • Feed & Pasture Management: Executing daily feed allocations, monitoring pasture quality, and assisting with feed budget implementation.

  • Milking Operations: Maintaining efficient, high-standard milking routines and milk quality standards.

  • Team Leadership: Supporting and helping guide junior farm staff to ensure smooth daily operations.

What We Are Looking For

  • Proven experience in a Herd Manager or senior dairy assistant role on NZ pastoral dairy farms.

  • Solid understanding of animal health, reproduction, and pasture-based dairy systems.

  • Strong communication skills and a team-first, positive attitude.

  • High standards of animal welfare and attention to detail.

  • Full NZ Driver’s License (valid visa / work rights required for overseas candidates).
