Herd Manager OR Couples role– Dairy Farm (Papamoa)

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are looking to fill our Herd Manager position immediately.

McCormick Farms Ltd is seeking an experienced and motivated Herd Manager to join our team on a well-established dairy operation located just 5 minutes from Papamoa and 15 minutes from Te Puke.

This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside an experienced Contract Milker who manages two adjacent dairy farms, with two cowsheds, in a supportive and progressive farming environment.

About the Farm

  • System 2 dairy operation

  • Approximately 850 Jersey cows

  • In-shed palm kernel feeding system

  • Two adjacent dairy farms and two cowsheds

  • 200-hectare runoff block

The Herd Manager Role

This is a full-time position working a 9 days on, 2 days off roster (excluding calving, where flexibility is required).

As Herd Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining excellent animal health, milk quality, and overall farm performance while supporting the day-to-day operation of both the dairy platform and runoff block.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitoring herd health and identifying sick animals

  • Treating sick and down cows

  • Detecting and managing mastitis

  • Drafting cows during mating for the AB technician

  • Maintaining high milk quality standards throughout the season

  • Completing plant washes and carrying out routine dairy plant maintenance

  • Maintaining a high standard of cleanliness in and around the cowsheds and farm

  • General farm maintenance, including fencing, repairs and maintenance

  • Tractor work and machinery operation

  • Assisting with work on the 200ha runoff block

  • Working closely with the Contract Milker and other staff to ensure the farm operates efficiently

About You

The successful applicant will:

  • Have previous experience as a Herd Manager or in a similar leadership role

  • Have a sound understanding of animal health and dairy farm best practice

  • Be confident treating sick and down cows

  • Have excellent stockmanship and attention to detail

  • Be honest, reliable and trustworthy

  • Be punctual and take pride in producing high-quality work

  • Be physically fit and capable of handling the demands of dairy farming

  • Be a proactive problem solver who can work independently

  • Work well within a team and communicate effectively

  • Be committed to maintaining high standards across all aspects of the farm

  • Hold a full driver's licence (preferred)

  • Be drug free

Couples Opportunity

This position can also be offered as a couples role.

We are also looking for a Day-to-Day Milker to work alongside the successful Herd Manager.

The Day-to-Day Milker position includes:

  • The same roster as the Herd Manager (9 days on, 2 days off, with flexibility during calving)

  • Morning and afternoon milkings only

  • No general farm work required during the day

  • Hourly rate to be confirmed, based on experience

  • Start date aligned with the successful Herd Manager
