Herd Manager – Dairy Farm
Position Overview
The Herd Manager supports the Farm Manager and 2IC in the day-to-day operation
of the farm, with a strong focus on animal health, milking performance, pasture
management, and team coordination.
This role is ideal for someone progressing from a Farm Assistant position who is
ready to take on greater responsibility, contribute to decision-making, and oversee
herd performance.
Key Responsibilities
Herd Management Monitor herd health, including lameness and mastitis
Identify and treat minor animal health issues within skill level and farm
protocols
Draft cows for mating, calving, treatment, and drying off
Maintain accurate animal health and production records
Milking Leadership
Lead milking routines to ensure efficiency, hygiene, and animal welfare
standards are met
Train and support junior staff during milking
Monitor milking plant performance and report any faults
Pasture and Feed Management
shift fences, and monitor pasture quality
Assist with feed-out operations and supplementary feeding decisions
Team Support and Leadership
Support and guide Farm Assistants and relief staff
Contribute to a positive and productive team environment
Machinery and Equipment
Safely operate tractors, quad bikes, and two-wheelers
Carry out basic machinery checks and report maintenance requirements
Effluent and Environmental Compliance Operate and manage effluent systems in line with consent conditions
Follow environmental best practices and farm sustainability plans
Calving and Reproduction
Assist with calving, including identifying cows in labour and caring for newborn
calves
Ensure proper colostrum management and accurate record-keeping
Support mating programme tasks, including heat detection
Skills and Attributes
Minimum of 2 years’ dairy farming experience
Strong livestock handling skills and confidence working with cattle
Good communication and teamwork skills
Reliable, organised, and able to work independently
Willingness to learn and step into a leadership role
Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all conditions
Hours and Roster
Full-time role following the farm roster (e.g. 8days on / 2 days off or similar)
Minimum 40–60 hours per week
Early starts, weekend work, and seasonal workload variations expected
