Morrison Farming is a large-scale, family-owned sheep and beef farming business based in the Rangitīkei, operating across 1,480 effective hectares. With over 160 years and six generations of farming history at Fern Flats, we combine deep local knowledge with a clear focus on productivity, adaptability, and long-term sustainability.
Our business runs across three properties – Fern Flats, Mangara, and Frank’s Road – integrating flat and hill country systems to optimise land use and livestock performance. We winter approximately 6,500 sheep (~4,000 ewes) and 1,400 cattle (~450 cows), maintaining a balanced 50:50 sheep-to-cattle ratio and operating at an average of 9.5–10.5 stock units per hectare through the year, depending on the season.
Livestock systems are matched to land type: breeding ewes and cows run on hill country, while the flats are used for finishing lambs, bulls and heifers, as well as calving the first calving heifers, and lambing triplet ewes, and some hoggets (season-dependent). A key focus is balancing feed supply with animal demand, and our scale, land diversity, and multiple species enable flexibility and efficiency.
Morrison Farming also supplies the dairy sector through our Ezicalve programme – a premium dairy beef brand focused on producing well-grown, quiet, calving-ease bulls for dairy farmers. This strengthens our connection with the wider industry and adds value across our livestock systems.
We continue to invest in development across genetics, infrastructure, and systems. Our goal is to grow a profitable, future-ready agribusiness that delivers high-quality livestock, responds to changing climatic, regulatory, and market conditions, and supports long-term environmental and financial sustainability.
