Dempsey Farms consists of 214 total hectares being 160 ha milking platform, 26 ha heifer grazing, and a 27 ha run-off located in a summer safe district. Contour is a mixture of flat to rolling with some hill sidelings on the milking platform. The heifer grazing block is connected to the milking platform and is of hill to steeper contour and the run-off is flat. Target is 370 spring calving cows wintered and are milked through a 27 aside herringbone shed.
Farm production has been 109,000 kgMS, 97,000 kgMS and 115,000 kgMS for the last 3 seasons respectively. Production for the 3 seasons prior was on average 112,000 kgMS with target to maintain production at 115,000 kgMS +.
Grass silage, summer turnips, maize silage and hay make up the supplement regime. A rotation of 5 ha of maize silage (approx. 125 tDM) and 5 ha of turnips is current policy with annual sown between crops. The run-off produces 130 tDM of grass silage and 20 tDM of hay on average. Grass silage cut on the MP is between 30-50 tDM. The dairy platform has benefited from renovated pastures following the cropping rotation and is supported by a sound fertiliser regime. Nitrogen is utilised 3-4 times per year.
The desire to improve farm infrastructure has seen new calf sheds built and investment into repair fencing across the milking platform, farm races and general buildings. Effluent is applied via travelling irrigator.
